Sir Fred Goodwin’s life was certainly affected when RBS was bailed out. He walked away with a terrific pension for failure. This type of bailout to serve the well connected is the antithesis of capitalism. Protect depositors to prevent banking runs..sure..but why protect Sir Fred at the expense of the UK taxpayer?

And on the basis of “impacting great many lives”, why not also bail out Woolworths, Habitat and Thomas Cook? What criteria do you use to assess whether the state should intervene and bail out a firm? How many small business get bailed out? Will Guy be bailed out if his small business doesn’t work out? I think we know the answer!

This article was a while ago, but I’ll just leave a comment anyway. Basically, you can’t claim Jobseekers Allowance whilst doing an internship unless there is a guaranteed job/training path to a job at the end which almost all employers do not offer. So basically you are actively making yourself worse off in the short term whilst doing it.

I’m lucky enough to have been brought up in London which meant that emasculating as it is to move home, I could easily do it. Not so much if you are from elsewhere.

You really nailed it here, and I absolutely agree.

What really struck me after Winehouse’s death was the public response. While the press might have ‘iconicised’ Amy after her death, I think a portion of the public was far less sympathetic, particularly in response to the media’s sudden disregard for the loss of so many lives in Norway. It’s unfortunate, as I think a lot of this turned into ‘Amy-bashing’ to emphasize her life’s lack of worth in comparison to the Norwegians who lost their lives, when she’s clearly not responsible for the media’s (or society’s) obsession with celebrities.

In any case, excellent writing — I really enjoyed reading this, and might even have to leave a bookmark. Cheers!

I broadly agree, although I’m tempted to put my partisan hat on and say I think you overcompensated slightly with the “no” section! But it’s nice to see someone made a good attempt to broadcast thoughtful arguments before the referendum.

For what it’s worth, my opinion is that in the long-term, AV probably doesn’t make coalitions any more likely than FPTP. In the short-term, of course, it might have made them marginally more likely. I guess we’ll never know now, anyway, which is sad.
